Design-Led Strategy: Design thinking for business strategy and entrepreneurship by University of Sydney (Coursera)

This is an intermediate level free Design Thinking course offered by University of Sydney on Coursera. It is geared towards entrepreneurs and managers across a range of industrial segments who are looking for tools and techniques to bring innovative products or services to their customers. All organizations from small-medium sized enterprises through to corporates can benefit from the strategies and methodologies taught in this course.

This course addresses the challenges of intra-organizational tensions or group think that block several creative ideas related to novel products from moving to fruition. It builds on the core concept of design thinking to apply it to advance business strategy and entrepreneurship. It teaches what ‘design strategy’ is, how it differs from traditional design thinking and business strategy, and how it can be used to improve existing or introduce novel products and services.

There are 5 weekly modules in this course that cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to design-led strategy
  • Elements of corporate strategy
  • How to plan and conduct primary market research and analyse the results gathered
  • Problem statement definition
  • Usable models and frameworks for gathering user feedback and testing solutions
  • Prototyping and product ideation
  • Corporate case studies

This course includes two practical case studies of Australia’s newest, most innovative financial institutions, UBank, and the global re-insurance giant, Swiss Re on how they are using design strategy to innovate and solve problems every day. These provide useful insights into the practical application and impact of design thinking strategies.
