How to Use The Gutenberg Block Editor
The Gutenberg block editor is an editor available in the WordPress versions released from 2019 and beyond. The Gutenberg block editor is automatically set for you to design your post and page. For those who have been using WordPress with the version before 2019, you might get a little bit overwhelmed as this is going to be a big change. WordPress is trying to make everything easier, modern, and more stylish here, so let’s thank the WordPress!
Truthfully, the updates change a lot of things. In the next lesson, we will specifically learn how to design a new home page and stuff, or maybe designing a blog post using the Gutenberg. The lessons are updated to the latest WordPress version, so don’t worry! We will provide you the instructions step-by-step on how to use the new editor. If you are a new WordPress player here, you might be confused but trust me, the difference between the previous and the latest version is huge and may be confusing.
Let’s get back to the main topic, shall we? Now we are going to give you a brief overview.
Go to your dashboard and create a “New” post or page. Choose a new page for our demo here.
After you click the “New Page”, the page editor will show up. It’s like a page for you to add text and comes along with some options on the right side. The spaces for you to add text are divided into blocks. You can type your title here in the “Title” block or add text in the “Text” block. There is also a “Comment” block. Here, you can add a “Heading” block or even add an image. You can upload images from your computer, or you can choose pictures you’ve uploaded on WordPress. Another block available is the “List” block. There will be additional options each time you click these blocks. For example, “Heading”. you can edit the font, make them bold, or add the italic effect. You can also adjust the heading, edit the size of your picture on the right-side menu, and so on.
For the “List” block, you can change it from bullet point list to numbered list, and so on. You can also change the text styles or add hyperlinks, and more. The good news is you can move the blocks instead of the default arrangement. You can simply click the up and down button on the left of the block, and it will move according to your wish. You can also add a new block by hovering your cursor to the below-left side on the page, and this circled plus icon “Add Block” will appear.
There are numerous types of blocks you can add, so you can explore them, like Audio Block, and so on. Or you can see the upper left side of the page where you can see the same plus icon. You can see most used blocks here, along with the other options like the different format of blocks, layout elements (page breaks or adding buttons to your page), widgets for categories or comments, embed if you want to connect your other social media to the page−Spotify music, Twitter post, or even YouTube videos.
Let’s try with YouTube! Just put the video URL on the column, and it will be embedded immediately. Simple. It’s much easier than to use the old custom HTML code or even different plug-ins to do all these choices.

Here’s the thing for the older WordPress version users. If you are moving from the old version to this new one, you will still have these menus on the right side. Actually, it’s quite the same. You will still get this document section along with the submenus inside like permalink, featured image, discussion, and the other things. Also, the block section is still there.
The difference is WordPress gives you an additional setting icon if you want to turn it on or off. Besides the setting icon, there is a three-dots icon and if you click on it, you can find three viewing options for you to choose.
You can choose “Full-Screen Mode” for editing, or get into “Spotlight Mode” where the blocks are faded out and you can choose the one block you want to focus on, or get all the toolbars to appear on the upper page rather than the right side of each block.
