English for Career Development by University of Pennsylvania (Coursera)
This 40-hour English course is available on Coursera and has been developed by University of Pennsylvania. The coursework is free to audit and is funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs.
The course teaches English through business skills like job searching, resumes, cover letters, and interviewing and helps learners through these different steps of the job application process. It is designed for high beginner to low intermediate level English language learners. Language teaching, readings, games and assessments in the course are adapted to learner’s English level.
The course curriculum comprises of 5 modules. Each module focuses on a different step of the job application process. The topics covered include:
- U.S. job application process
- Strategies for identifying the jobs that match your interests and skills
- Steps necessary to produce a professional-looking resume
- Introduction to professional letter writing format
- Writing a clear and concise cover letter
- Develop speaking skills to introduce yourself in a professional setting
- Interviewing for a job
The course experience is enhanced with several games and exercises incorporated in the coursework. Throughout the course learners learn and practice new vocabulary by reading articles, listening to the recordings, watching videos, playing games and completing assessments. Learners also have opportunities to connect with other online learners from around the world.
